Michael Sobczak

“When people think about architecture, creating buildings pop into people’s heads, but it is more than that. It is an art of designing a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing with purpose that reflects each client’s unique needs, culture, and place.  As a designer, I have a passion and belief for the artistic side of the industry, and I try to bring every project to life with unique elements and ideas.”

Michael started in architecture when he was in the 4th grade and wrote a paper saying he was going to be an architect one day. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, he continued down that path by interning at PRA when he was 17, and now he is a Senior Partner with over 35 years of experience. When Michael works on a project, he enjoys learning the unique drivers of it, so he can develop the right solution within budget. He always has the mindset of “how can I make it uniquely theirs,” so he constantly brainstorms different ideas and isn’t afraid to implement diverse elements in a design. In the end, he has a goal of creating environments that support and make the lives of people easier. 

Unlike most positions here, Michael is on his own island, where he does a little bit of everything. He is a trifecta of designer, architect, and interior designer. Because he isn’t tied to one studio, he can float between them all, giving him the variety, he seeks in his day. Even though the project processes in the studios are the same, each story is different. Figuring out that story is what motivates him. Being unattached to a studio also enables Michael to work with the young designers when something needs to be done. With a passion and history in teaching, he jumps at every opportunity to help the younger staff build upon their knowledge and skills within the industry. 

Outside the office, you may find Michael teaching a spin class or on the tennis court.  He also enjoys the fine attention to detail required to do woodworking and furniture making.
